Mary E. Powell, 99, of Des Moines, Iowa was called home on October 22, 2019. Mary Elizabeth Powell was born on April 23, 1920 in Atchinson, KS, to James and Christine Smith. She moved to Des Moines as a teenager and made Des Moines her home. She was educated in Des Moines Public Schools and later received her GED as an adult. Miss Mary, as she was later called, was a hard worker and held a variety of positions before retiring from Wesley Acres Retirement Home in 1990 at age 70. Although she may have retired, she didn’t really stop working, she participated in various programs for seniors and last participated in the Volunteer Grandparent program at Monroe and Hillis Elementary Schools.
Mary was very creative, with sewing and making quilts being her strong suits. However, there wasn’t too much she didn’t at least try to make from vests to Christmas sweatshirts, Raggedy Ann dolls and Teddy bears and with a little of this and that in between. Miss Mary loved to go shopping at thrift stores or “junk stores”, it was her therapy. Mary also liked to cook, the most memorable being her fudge, Apple cake and the famous peanut butter pie.
Those waiting to welcome Mary home were her parents, James and Kristine Smith, her Aunt Amanda Bedford, brother James Jr., sister, Ruth, son, Norman Pickett, grandsons, David Thompson, Barry Collier, Richard Collier and Perry Dean Pickett.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Jacqueline Collier, Melva Tate and Rosemary Tate. Her grandchildren, Brien Collier, Mark Collier, Deartra Collier, Marnee Thompson, Irwin Wade, Sue Wade, Shelley Pickett, Norman Pickett Jr., Marva Pickett, Alona Pickett, Michelle Pickett and Melanie Pickett and a host of great and great-great grandchildren.
Miss Mary was an original resident of the Frank W. Smith Retirement Center and lived there for 23 years and enjoyed all those that resided there as her neighbors.
Special thanks to all the caring and kind hearts that work at the Urbandale Health Care Center and those who work for St. Croix Hospice for traveling with Miss Mary the final miles before she was called home.
