Obituary

Margarete Helen Wityk died shortly before her 97th birthday on November 30th, 2019 at home.

She was born in 1923 in Grunau by Schweidnitz in Silesia, Germany. She grew up there as an only child. After the 8th grade she completed an apprenticeship as a florist. She then entered in the mandatory girls service and after basic training was moved to Berlin where she lived with an aunt for the greater part of WWII. She found work in Berlin after the war, married and had her first child.

In September of 1949 she and her husband immigrated to the US with their son. Their ship landed in New Orleans. Their first home was near Mountain View, Missouri where her husband worked on the ranch of their sponsor Dr. Grace Doane, and a son and daughter were born.

In 1955 they moved to Hartford, IA and in 1958 to the south side of Des Moines. It was in the early to mid 1950's that she finally received word that her mother had also survived the war and had left what had become Poland and was living in West Berlin. They saw each other for the first time after almost 20 years when her mother was able to make a trip to Des Moines in 1960.

She was a homemaker until the late 1960's when she began working for Fox Printing. Her first trip back to Germany was in 1969. After that, she made repeated trips visiting her mother and other relatives. When Fox Printing closed, she worked for Check All Valve until retirement.

She loved flowers and also kept a vegetable garden. She enjoyed knitting and crochetting and made something for each grandchild and great-grandchild until the arthritis in her hands made it too painful. She pursued her one remaining hobby of putting together jigsaw puzzles up into the last year of her life.

She was preceded in death by her mother Luisa Juenschke, her adoptive father Bruno, various aunts, uncles and cousins, her husband Stephan, her daughter-in-law Judi, her good friend and neighbor Ted Smith and to her dismay, almost all of her friends and work colleagues.

She will be missed by her sons Peter and Mike (Deb), her daughter Karen Voss, her seven grandchildren Michelle Kane (David), Michael Wityk (Jeci), Monica Strange (Justin), Miranda Reynolds (Casey), Christopher Voss (Karolina), Philipp Voss (Sarah), Matthew Wityk, and thirteen great-grandchildren, Hailey, Laura, Jacqueline, Keegan. Stephan, Leah, Jesse, Mckenna, Kelsey, Kiera, Annabelle, Bradley, and Jan.-

Our thanks to Unity Point At Home Home Care and Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pioneer Columbus Senior Center located at 2100 SE 5th Street, Des Moines, IA on Sunday December 22nd from 2 to 5 pm.
