Ivadell “Iva” Corpier, 88, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away in her home on Saturday, January 12, 2019. She was born to Joseph “Joe” Calvin and Elsie Edith (Knight) Clarke on June 1, 1930.
Although Iva was born in Des Moines, she lived a portion of her childhood in the southwest part of Iowa. She was living in Des Moines when she met and married her husband Columbus Macie “Leon” Corpier in 1966. They purchased a home in Des Moines and took pleasure in fixing it up. In their spare time, they enjoyed playing cards and visiting family.
Even though Iva and Leon had no children of their own, they found joy in spending time with nieces, nephews and their children. Sadly, Iva and Leon had only twenty short years together. At age 59, Leon passed away from cancer. Iva lived the remainder of her years as a widow in the same home they purchased early in their marriage.
In addition to being a homemaker, Iva worked part-time as a housekeeper. She was a strong lady with a bubbly personality. She loved life and always seemed to find something to smile about. Iva had a knack for remembering dates. Whether it was the anniversary of a family member or the date Iva paid a bill, she amazed family and friends with her instant recall.
Cats were Iva's passion in life. If a stray showed up at her door, Iva gave it a home. Although she never had more than two or three cats at a given time, over the years Iva adopted many. She was known for being an avid collector of cat memorabilia. Even though Iva lived a carefree life not worrying about what tomorrow would bring, she delighted in planning ahead for what new cat item she was going to purchase next. Iva was always excited to show family and friends her newest trinket.
Iva is survived by her sister Delores Taylor of Knoxville, Iowa, her nieces Linda Miller of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Debra Darner of New Port Richey, Florida and Karen Ridlen of Pella, Iowa along with two nephews Rick Peek of Centerville, Iowa and Eric Martin of Pella, Iowa. She also leaves behind a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Iva was preceded in death by her devoted husband Leon, her sister Betty Allen, her brothers Charles Clark, William Baysinger and Harold Martin. Also preceding her in death were her niece Brenda Beck along with two nephews, Doug Swanson, and Lester Taylor.
Iva’s body has been cremated. A private burial of her ashes at the Ollie Cemetery in Ollie, Iowa is pending at a later date. No memorial has been designated. However, if you would like to remember Iva in a special way, please give a memorial to a cat rescue of your choice.
What will be remembered most about Iva is her loving embrace, warm smile and the special love she had for cats. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
